Facebook launches Notify, an application that alerts topical events

Facebook on Wednesday launched a new application allowing users to keep abreast of current events or topics of interest by receiving mobile notifications, drawn from the content provided by such media groups.

"Notify" is available for now only in the United States and for users of Apple's iPhone, and allows the user to choose according to their interests between a series of "stations".

Notify sends notifications from selected stations on the user's smartphone screen, which can then go read the article or watch the video concerned, but eventually put it aside for later and share on Facebook or social networking, email or text message.

Notify extends the mobile application galaxy Facebook, which already has an application for its own social network, both messaging (Messenger and WhatsApp) and sharing application Instagram pictures.

This new application is part of an offensive to Facebook in recent months to beef up its offer in terms of topical content, a niche where it competes another social network, Twitter.

Facebook had last month extended the notifications sent via the network itself to add sports scores or local news to existing warnings when a friend of the user's birthday or commenting on one of his publications.

Facebook also recently strengthened its internal search engine to enable its users to find more publications on topical themes, and generally seeking to strengthen its content offering through partnerships with magazines, information and other media websites , or a rise in the supply of videos. more at news headlines today
