Mexico death toll rose to 273 due to the earthquake


Mexico: The death toll in a powerful earthquake in Mexico reached 273, local authorities reported. Rescuers continue to search for survivors under the rubble.

Underground pushes of magnitude 7.1 led to the destruction of dozens of homes, millions of people were left without electricity.

President Enrique Pena Nieto said that the rescue of the victims as a result of the disaster is "the main priority."

Rescuers believe that under the debris of 10 buildings in Mexico City still can be living people. More than 500 troops and about 200 police and volunteers continue to work at the site of the collapse of the Enrique Rebsamen Primary School in the country's capital, where the body of the teacher was found at night.

According to the latest information, 11 pupils managed to save, 19 children and six adults were killed.

Deputy Minister of the Navy of Mexico Angel Enrique Sarmiento said that under the rubble may be one living person - a school employee.

Earlier there were reports that a girl was found under the rubble of the school, and her name Frida Sophia appeared in the local media.

However, later, the Mexican newspaper Universal reported that there were no girls with this name on the list of pupils of the school. The Mexican Navy leadership apologized for disseminating false information.


About 30 people can be under the rubble of a six-story office building. Police organized patrols in areas affected by the earthquake to prevent vandalism and looting. The earthquake occurred on Tuesday at 13:14 local time.

The hearth of the tremors was near the city of Atensingo in the state of Puebla, about 120 kilometers from Mexico City, at a depth of 51 kilometers.

The earthquake occurred at a time when the rescue services of Mexico City conducted exercises to combat the consequences of such disasters, on the 32nd anniversary of a powerful earthquake in 1985, which killed about 10,000 people.
