A powerful 6.8 magnitude earthquake struck the foothills of the Himalayas near a significant Tibetan city on Tuesday, resulting in the deaths of at least 95 people and widespread damage to homes. The earthquake’s impact was felt across the region, with tremors also reported in neighboring Nepal, Bhutan, and India.

Location and Depth

The China Earthquake Networks Centre pinpointed the epicenter in Tingri county, known as the northern gateway to the Mount Everest region. The earthquake occurred at a depth of 10 km (6.2 miles). The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) measured the quake at a magnitude of 7.1. It struck at 9:05 a.m. local time (0105 GMT).

Impact and Damage in Tibet

Casualties and Destruction

Chinese state-run television reported at least 95 deaths and 130 injuries on the Tibetan side. There were no immediate reports of fatalities in other affected regions. The Shigatse region of Tibet, home to 800,000 people and administered by Shigatse city (the traditional seat of the Panchen Lama), bore the brunt of the quake.

Scenes of Destruction

Video footage released by Tibet Fire and Rescue showed extensive damage in Shigatse city, with many homes reduced to rubble. Rescue efforts were underway, with rescue workers searching through the debris and extracting at least one injured person.
