On Thursday, India ordered the suspension of
its largest rice export category, a move that is expected to cut shipments by
about half from the world's largest grain exporter, triggering concerns of
further inflation in the global food market.
India accounts for over 40% of the world's rice exports, and low supplies along with other exporters mean that any reduction in shipments could raise food prices further, due to unpredictable weather. the
Ministry of Food in a statement, citing an 11.5% increase in retail prices over 12 months.
The broken and non-basmati rice category accounted for about 10 million tons out of a total of 22 million tons of Indian rice exports last year. It also restricted sugar exports this year due to a decline in sugarcane harvest.
