"The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5" is leaving no stone unturned before Apple announces its upcoming iPhone 15 lineup this fall. On Wednesday, July 26, the manufacturer unveiled its new tablets, Galaxy Tab S9, S9+, and S9 Ultra, its Galaxy Watch 6 Series smartwatches..
Being
virtually alone in the European market for mobile devices with flexible
screens, the South Korean manufacturer aims to capitalize on the success of its
foldable smartphones, which have been winning over the youth with their
compactness, design, and functionalities. Will the Z Flip 5 be able to build on
the success of its predecessors? and is ready to reveal its highlights.
A Larger Front Display
And there
you have it, the device that Samsung just introduced will hit the market on
August 11 and has plenty of features to impress. At first glance, you can
notice that the manufacturer has expanded the external screen of its foldable
smartphone. Growing from 1.9 inches on the Z Flip 4, it now measures 3.4
inches, presenting an increased surface area of 278%! This expansion opens up
new possibilities.
What used
to be merely informative (for reading notifications, controlling music) has now
transformed into a Super AMOLED display that can be utilized in many situations
while the smartphone is folded. For instance, it can be used to navigate with
Google Maps, respond to messages using a virtual keyboard, make phone calls,
watch videos, and access the device's settings. A simple swipe from the bottom
to the top opens Samsung Wallet, granting access to loyalty cards, payment
cards, and boarding passes. Quite convenient!
A Refined Hinge
When
unfolded, the Z Flip 5 reveals its internal screen. This time, it boasts a
6.7-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X display (with enhanced contrasts and a refresh rate
of 120Hz), featuring a 22:9 aspect ratio and Full HD+ resolution (2,640 x 1,080
pixels). Although the fold in the screen remains visible (especially with
light-colored images), it conceals a brand-new hinge that Samsung is
particularly proud of.
This
improvement minimizes the risk of debris getting lodged in that space and
potentially damaging the smartphone's screen, which, by the way, is protected
by Gorilla Glass Victus 2 known for its durability. Samsung claims that this
new hinge can endure at least 200,000 openings/closings.
"Flex" Mode for a Fresh Experience
"Flex"
as in folded/foldable/flexible. This mode allows the Z Flip 5 to be propped up
at a 90-degree angle, offering a multitude of new possibilities, such as video
calls, checking emails on the lower part of the screen while watching a video
on the upper part, and much more. "Flex" is a significant motivator
for potential buyers, ranking just after the design and the "pocketable"
aspect of the Z Flip, says J.B., Director of Mobile experience
Marketing at 20 Minutes. This feature also appeals to a female clientele,
constituting 50% of Z Flip buyers (while Z Fold buyers are 80% male, according
to our information).
With an
IPX8 rating, the Galaxy Z Flip 5 can withstand brief immersion in freshwater.
It is equipped with a 3,700 mAh battery (with 25W wired charging and 10W
wireless charging). While its predecessor's price has dropped (now starting
from 699 euros), the Galaxy Z Flip 5 will be offered at 1,199 euros for the
256GB model (the launch price of Z Flip 4 in 128GB), and 1,339 euros for the
512GB model. Notably, the significant upgrade in the external display sets the
fifth instalment of the foldable series apart from its predecessors. Despite
Motorola's razor 40 ultra being the first to unveil a foldable smartphone with
a large 3.6-inch external screen just before summer, Samsung remains
unbothered, dominating 95% of the foldable smartphone sales
