Breakdancing Competitions at the 2024 Paris Olympics

Everything You Need to Know About the Men's and Women's Breakdance Finals at the 2024 Paris Olympics

On Friday, August 9th, and Saturday, August 10th, breakdancing will make its debut at the Olympic Games.

What is Breakdancing?

Breakdancing, an urban dance form that originated in the Bronx in the 1970s, is making its first appearance at the Olympic Games in Paris 2024. B-Boys and B-Girls will compete for the gold medal in this dynamic sport. Originally developed during late-night parties on the streets of the United States, breakdancing is a part of Afro-American culture, expressing itself through acrobatic moves and distinctive footwork to the beats of DJ music. The New York City Breakers and Rock Steady Crew played a significant role in spreading breakdancing in the 1980s, and by the 1990s, the first international competitions were held. This is the first time a dance event is included in the Olympic program.

Breakdancing was also featured at the 2018 Youth Olympic Games, where it was so well-received that the International Olympic Committee (IOC) decided to include it in the 2024 Games. The sport was also part of the 2019 Southeast Asian Games in the Philippines. Today, the World Dance Sport Federation is recognized by the IOC as the international governing body, and sponsorships are following suit.

There will be separate competitions for men and women in breakdancing. Solo battles are set between 10 B-Boys and 10 B-Girls, promising an exciting showcase of talent. In each duel, two participants will go head-to-head in 60-second throwdowns, aiming to impress the judges with moves like 6-steps, windmills, and cool freezes. Judges will award points for creativity, personality, and technique (60%), as well as versatility, performance, and musicality (40%). By including breakdancing in the Olympics, the IOC hopes to engage younger generations with the competition.
