FREDERICKSBURG, TX – Fire crews are making progress on the massive Crabapple Fire near Fredericksburg. Officials report that the fire, which has burned 8,640 acres, is now 40% contained.

How the Fire Started

The Crabapple Fire ignited on Saturday, March 15, during a Red Flag warning. High winds of up to 45 mph helped spread the flames quickly.

Firefighters responded to the 8700 block of Lower Crabapple around 1 p.m. The fire started at 400 acres but spread fast, leading to evacuations in the area.

Smoke Seen for Miles

The smoke was visible in Fredericksburg and surrounding areas. Multiple fire departments across Gillespie County joined the effort to contain the fire.
